Coaching, training and consultation
Offering consultation focuses on giving advice on what to do when faced with mental health questions and dilemmas among religious.
My coaching involves counseling religious people on an individual or group base. The methodologies I apply are grounded in multiple psychotherapeutic frames of reference as well as the religious context.
Training may focus on conflict resolution; addressing issues related to emotional and sexual matters; community-building efforts; and preventing forms of inappropriate behavior.
Work
My sessions can take place either on-site or at my office. In some cases, I work online.
In terms of content, I have experience with:
- Individual coaching sessions for members of religious orders
- Screenings (for example, prior to the training period)
- Coaching for religious communities
- Workshops / Training Sessions
- Presentations

About me
I was born in 1958. After high school, I began studying medicine at the Catholic University of Nijmegen in 1976. During my college years, I was part of an ecumenical community.
After specializing in psychiatry and psychotherapy, I began working in mental health care. Starting in September 2025 (when I reach retirement age), I will be working exclusively at the Aelred Practice. Although I will remain registered as a psychiatrist-psychotherapist until September 2027, I now work as a coach at my practice and do not have contracts with health insurers.
When interacting with another person, questions constantly arise: “Who is this person? What is their life story? Where do they feel pain, hurt, or vulnerability—but also where do they find resilience, strength, and inspiration?” To meaningfully engage in this process with the other person each time, you must also ask yourself these questions and reflect on them. Fortunately, I have also had the experience of undergoing psychotherapy and receiving spiritual guidance on my own life journey.
About the practice Aelred
The practice Aelred started on August 1st, 2023. The name Aelred is taken from Aelred of Rievaulx, a 12th century monk, historian and author who was abbot of the Cistercian abbey at Rievaulx in Yorkshire, England. This abbey was founded in 1132 by monks from the Abbey of Clairvaux (France), well known because of Saint Bernard.
Aelred wrote several spiritual works including Speculum Charitatis (The Mirror of Charity) and De Spirituali Amicitia (On Spiritual Friendship), two works that provided inspiration in my life.
In my work as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, but also as an active member of the faith community, I have observed over the past few decades that many questions related to faith and the search for meaning can lead to mental health issues. Doubts, uncertainties, and crises of all kinds also arise in religious life, requiring a listening ear, spiritual care, and sometimes professional help.
At the group level, tensions and dynamics can also arise that may have a growth-inhibiting or even destructive effect on individuals or the community in which they live. In such situations, tailored coaching can be utilized.
